Horticulture Corner: Lily pads in Lake Kunming

Lake Kunming, the body of water edging the Summer Palace and Long Walk (a covered walkway leading from the Palace around the lake famous for the painting along its wooden roof), was full of motorized and pedal boats on the sunny day we visited. Many folks obviously preferred the boating option to the literal long walk around the side of the lake. However, a few corners remained calm, and in them, willows hung over patches of lily pads with pink blossoms. The contrast of green water and lily pads to the bright blue sky (amazingly bright, for Beijing) was much more impressive than the Long Walk, in my opinion. (But nothing can beat those turquoise roof tiles on the Summer Palace!)
